Five Senses
NCERT anchor: NCERT Looking Around Class 1 — Theme: My Body (seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching)
What you'll learn
- Use five senses: see, hear, smell, taste, touch.
- Match each sense to body part: eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin.
- Senses keep us safe — smell smoke, see cars, hear bell.
Key concepts
1. See (eyes)
Level 1 (Verbal): Eyes see colours, books, friends on playground.
Level 2 (Symbolic): See → eyes → brain understands picture.
Visual: Chart: eye icon + rainbow.
2. Hear (ears)
Verbal: Ears hear tabla, teacher, dog bark.
Visual: Ear icon + bell.
3. Smell, taste, touch
Verbal: Nose smells jasmine and samosa; tongue tastes sweet mango; skin feels hot/cold/rough/smooth.
Worked example
Market visit with Amma — using all senses
Step 1 — **See** red apples and green mangoes (eyes).
Step 2 — **Smell** fresh coriander (nose).
Step 3 — **Touch** rough coconut shell carefully (skin).
Step 4 — **Taste** small piece of jaggery (tongue); **hear** vendor call (ears).
Answer: all five senses used safely with adult.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Tongue sees food | Wrong sense organ | Eyes see; tongue tastes |
| Only four senses | Forgot touch | Skin touch is fifth sense |
| Listen with eyes closed means no see | One sense off, others on | Each sense works separately |
Quick check
- Which sense organ do you use to hear the bell?
- What do we taste with?
- How does skin help you know ice is cold?
- Stretch: Which two senses help you cross a busy road safely?
Revision tip: At dinner, name which sense you use for each part of the meal.

Interactive Exploration Suggestions (Drishti Live Worlds)
- Use the platform-native live simulation or PhET-style tool for this topic (number line, Venn, physics playground, molecule builder, sensor dashboard, etc.).
- Mirror / body / home activity: physically do the concept (count objects, measure, role-play) and photograph or describe for portfolio.
- Voice or text reflection with AI Mentor: explain the concept to a younger student or family member.
AI Mentor Prompts (Socratic, Board-Adaptive)
- "Explain this concept to a Class 6 student using one real example from an Indian home, school, market, or festival."
- "What is one common mistake students make here, and how would you catch yourself making it?"
- Stretch: "How does this connect to coding, robotics, money, health, environment, or a future career?"
Gamification, Portfolio & Parent Visibility
- Complete the core practice + one extension activity (photo, table, short reflection, or mini-project) for base XP + topic badge.
- 5-7 day streak or family discussion note = multiplier + visible artifact in parent/principal dashboard.
- Best real-world application stories (anonymised) featured on class or national leaderboard.
Robotics, STEM & Future Skills Bridges
- One hands-on project or measurement using the Drishti kit or household items that makes the concept physical.
- Direct link to at least one Future Skill track (Money Management, Green Tech, Cyber Defenders, Micro-Entrepreneurship, AI Mastery, Sustainable Living, Personality Development).
- Coding extension where relevant (simple script, simulation, or data logging).
