1. Naming words for animals

Level 1 (Verbal): Words like dog, cat, elephant, rabbit name an animal.

Visual: Picture of a cow — the naming word is cow.

2. Naming words for things

Level 1 (Verbal): Words like ball, book, chair, kite name a thing we can touch.

Visual: Picture of a kite — the naming word is kite.

3. Sorting practice

Verbal: Living animal names vs non-living object names — both are naming words.

Worked example

Sorting: lion, ball, sing, book

Step 1 — lion names an animal.
Step 2 — ball and book name things.
Step 3 — sing is an action word, not a naming word.
Answer: lion = animal; ball, book = things; sing = not a naming word.

Common mistakes

Confusing an animal sound with its name	moo is a sound, cow is the naming word	Ask "what is its name?" not "what sound does it make?"
