Heavy and Light by Feel
NCERT anchor: NCERT Looking Around Class 1 — Theme: Things We Use (comparing heavy and light objects)
What you'll learn
- Heavy things are hard to lift; light things are easy to lift.
- We compare weight by holding two things, one in each hand.
- Size does not always tell us weight — a small thing can be heavy too.
Key concepts
1. Heavy things
Level 1 (Verbal): A school bag full of books is heavy — it takes effort to lift.
Level 2 (Symbolic): Heavy = needs more effort/strength to lift.
Visual: A child struggling to lift a full bag with both hands.
2. Light things
Verbal: A single pencil or a feather is light — it lifts easily with one finger.
Symbolic: Light = needs very little effort to lift.
Visual: A hand holding up a feather with one finger.
3. Comparing by holding
Hold one object in each hand. The one that pulls your hand down more is the heavier one.
Worked example
Comparing a schoolbook and a rubber
Step 1 — Hold the schoolbook in your right hand.
Step 2 — Hold the rubber (eraser) in your left hand.
Step 3 — Notice the book pulls your hand down more.
Step 4 — Conclude: the book is heavier; the rubber is lighter.
Answer: the schoolbook is heavier than the rubber.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Thinking bigger always means heavier | A big balloon can be lighter than a small stone | Compare by holding, not just by looking at size |
| Guessing weight only by color or shape | Color and shape don't decide weight | Hold both objects to feel which is heavier |
| Mixing up heavy with hard | Hard and heavy are different properties | Heavy is about weight; hard is about texture |
Quick check
- Name one heavy thing and one light thing from your bag.
- How can you tell which of two objects is heavier?
- Is a small stone always lighter than a big feather-filled pillow?
- Stretch: Why can a small coin be heavier than a large empty box?
Revision tip: Say aloud: 'Hold both, compare, and see which pulls down more.'
