Key concepts

1. Matching halves

Level 1 (Verbal): A butterfly's two wings look the same — if the left wing has dots, the right wing has matching dots.

Level 2 (Symbolic): Left half = Right half (mirrored) in a symmetric picture.

Visual: Fold a paper heart in half — both sides match exactly.

2. Counting missing parts

If a flower needs 6 petals and only 4 are drawn, 2 more petals are missing.

3. Mirror flips left and right

In a true mirror image, a raised right hand appears as a raised left hand in the reflection.

Worked example

Complete the butterfly

Step 1 — The left wing has a blue circle and a red dot.
Step 2 — Butterfly wings are symmetric (they match).
Step 3 — The right wing must have the same blue circle and red dot.
Answer: a blue circle and a red dot on the right wing.
