Core

Integers: Core

Core

Integers (NCERT Ch. 6)

What you'll learn

  • Represent integers (…, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, …) on a number line.
  • Compare and order integers using the number line.
  • Add and subtract integers using number-line rules.
  • Understand real-life uses: temperature below zero, profit/loss, floors below ground level.

Key concepts

  1. Integers include positive numbers, negative numbers, and zero.
  2. On the number line, numbers to the right are greater, numbers to the left are smaller.
  3. Adding a positive integer moves right; adding a negative integer moves left.
  4. Subtracting an integer is the same as adding its opposite: a − b = a + (−b).
  5. Every negative integer is less than every positive integer and less than 0.

Worked example

Find (−5) + 8 using the number line.

Start at -5. Move 8 steps to the right (adding a positive number).
-5 → -4 → -3 → -2 → -1 → 0 → 1 → 2 → 3
Answer: 3

Common mistakes

  • Thinking −8 is greater than −3 (it's smaller — further left on the number line).
  • Forgetting the sign when subtracting: 4 − 9 = 4 + (−9) = −5, not 5.
  • Mixing up direction of movement for addition vs subtraction.

Quick check

  • Which is greater: −7 or −2?
  • Compute (−4) − (−6).
