Spot the Rhyme

NCERT anchor: NCERT English Mridang Class 1 — listening and sound discrimination activities

• Listen to a group of words and find the one that does not rhyme.
• Sharpen listening skills for ending sounds.
• Explain why a word does not belong to a rhyme group.

1. Comparing endings

Level 1 (Verbal): Say all the words. Three end the same way, one is different — that one is the odd one out.

Level 2 (Symbolic): cat, hat, mat, dog — dog ends in -og, the rest end in -at.

Visual: Line up four picture cards; circle the one whose name sounds different at the end.

2. Checking your answer

Verbal: Say the odd word and one rhyming word together — if they don't sound alike at the end, you found it.

3. Why this skill matters

Verbal: Good listening for rhyme helps with reading and poetry later.

Finding the odd one out in: sun, fun, bun, top

Step 1 — Say each word: sun, fun, bun, top.
Step 2 — sun, fun, bun all end in -un.
Step 3 — top ends in -op, not -un.
Step 4 — top does not rhyme with the others.
Answer: top is the odd one out.

• Odd one out: pig, big, wig, sun.
• Odd one out: pen, ten, dog, hen.
• Why does pot not rhyme with sun?
• Stretch: Make your own group of four with one odd word.
