Key concepts

Level 1 — The three laws

Verbal: Objects resist changes in motion (inertia); net force produces acceleration; forces always occur in equal opposite pairs on different bodies.

Symbolic: ΣF = ma; W = mg; F_A on B = −F_B on A; 1 N = 1 kg·m/s² exactly.

Level 2 — Problem-solving framework

Steps: (1) Identify system (2) FBD for each body (3) Choose axes (4) ΣF = ma component-wise (5) Solve constraints (strings, surfaces).

Equilibrium: ΣF = 0 ⇒ a = 0. Not same as "no forces" — forces may balance.

NCERT spotlight — Pulleys and connected masses

Two masses m1 and m2 over an ideal pulley: acceleration a = (m2 - m1)g/(m1 + m2) if m2 > m1 and hanging. Tension T = 2 m1 m2 g/(m1 + m2). Draw separate FBDs for each mass.

Lift problems: Apparent weight in an accelerating lift: N = m(g +/- a) for up/down acceleration. Pseudo-force treatment appears in non-inertial frames (advanced).

Momentum conservation preview: When net external force is zero, total momentum of an isolated system is conserved — recoil of gun, collision problems.

Worked example

A 5 kg block on a smooth horizontal surface is pulled with 20 N horizontal force. Find acceleration and normal force (g = 10 m/s²).

Step 1 — FBD: F = 20 N →, weight 50 N ↓, normal N ↑.
Step 2 — Vertical: N − mg = 0 → N = 50 N (no vertical acceleration).
Step 3 — Horizontal: F = ma → a = 20/5 = 4 m/s².
Step 4 — Third law pairs: pull on block / block on puller; N on block / block on table.
Step 5 — If surface rough later, friction opposes motion on FBD.

Applications — Atwood machine and lifts

Atwood machine acceleration a = (m2-m1)g/(m1+m2) demonstrates N2L with constraint that both masses share same acceleration magnitude. Person standing on weighing scale in elevator: apparent mass m(g+a) when accelerating upward — reading exceeds true weight; free fall gives zero apparent weight (weightlessness sensation).
