Measurement, Money & Data: Money

Money

Money — Rupees and Paise

What you'll learn

  • That 100 paise = ₹1, and money amounts can be added and subtracted like whole numbers.
  • To find the total cost of buying more than one item.
  • To calculate change received after paying with a note of higher value.

Key concepts

Level 1 — Core idea

Verbal: If a pencil costs ₹8 and an eraser costs ₹5, buying both costs ₹8 + ₹5 = ₹13.

Symbolic: Total = price 1 + price 2. Change = amount paid − total cost.

Visual: Picture coins and notes: a ₹50 note used to buy a ₹32 item leaves ₹50 − ₹32 = ₹18 in change.

Level 2 — Going deeper

When paying with a note larger than the total cost, always subtract the total cost from the note's value to find the change. If buying several items, add all the prices first before subtracting.

NCERT anchor

NCERT Math Mela, Class 3 money chapters use shop and market scenes with coins and notes to practise totals and change-making.

Worked example

A toy costs ₹65. Aisha pays with a ₹100 note. How much change does she get?

Step 1 — Amount paid: ₹100
Step 2 — Cost of toy: ₹65
Step 3 — Change = ₹100 − ₹65 = ₹35
Answer: ₹35

A pencil costs ₹12 and a notebook costs ₹38. What is the total cost, and how much change from ₹100?

Step 1 — Total cost = ₹12 + ₹38 = ₹50
Step 2 — Change = ₹100 − ₹50 = ₹50
Answer: Total ₹50; Change ₹50
