Shape Classification

Classification: Shape Classification

Shape Classification

Shape Classification

What you'll learn

  • Sort shapes by whether they have straight sides or curved edges.
  • Spot the one shape that does not match the group.
  • Describe shapes in words without needing a picture.

Key concepts

Level 1 — Core idea

Verbal: A circle, oval, or ring has a curved, round edge and no corners. A triangle, square, or pentagon is made only of straight sides and has corners.

Symbolic: Curved group = {no straight sides}; Straight group = {only straight sides, has corners}.

Visual: Trace a circle with your finger — it never turns a sharp corner. Trace a square — your finger turns four sharp corners.

Level 2 — Going deeper

Some shape names sound similar but belong to different groups — a semicircle has one curved edge (curved group) while a pentagon has five straight edges (straight group). Read the shape name carefully before deciding.

NCERT anchor

NCERT Math Mela, Class 3 — Shapes and Patterns — identifying 2D shapes by their edges and corners supports this classification skill.

Worked example

Which does NOT belong: Circle, Oval, Ring, Square?

Step 1 — Circle, Oval, Ring all have curved edges and no corners.
Step 2 — Square is made only of straight sides.
Answer: Square

Which does NOT belong: Triangle, Pentagon, Hexagon, Crescent?

Step 1 — Triangle, Pentagon, Hexagon are made only of straight sides.
Step 2 — Crescent has a curved edge.
Answer: Crescent

Common mistakes

MistakeWhyFix
Confusing oval and octagonSimilar-sounding namesSay the shape's edge type out loud
Counting corners incorrectlyRushed countingTrace the shape's outline in your mind step by step
Ignoring "no corners" clueFocus only on sizeCurved shapes never have sharp corners
Mixing up semicircle and pentagonBoth start with similar soundsRemember: semi- means "half", so a semicircle is half curved

Quick check

  • Which does NOT belong: Ellipse, Crescent, Semicircle, Hexagon?
  • Which does NOT belong: Square, Rectangle, Triangle, Ring?
  • Which does NOT belong: Circle, Octagon, Oval, Ring?
  • Stretch: Which does NOT belong: Pentagon, Hexagon, Octagon, Circle?

Revision tip: Ask "does it have a straight side?" — group by yes or no.
