Polygons

Comprehensive notes, formulas, and practice questions for Polygons.

Polygons

Polygons and Quadrilaterals

What you'll learn

  • Name polygons by side count: triangle to octagon.
  • Classify quadrilaterals: square, rectangle, rhombus, parallelogram, trapezium.
  • Count diagonals in simple polygons (intro).

Key concepts

Level 1 — Polygon names

SidesNameExample in India
3TriangleSamosa cross-section
4QuadrilateralRoom floor, stamp
5Pentagon(intro)
6HexagonHoneycomb cell
8OctagonStop sign shape

Level 2 — Quadrilateral family

ShapeKey property
Square4 equal sides, 4 right angles
RectangleOpposite sides equal, 4 right angles
Rhombus4 equal sides, angles not necessarily 90°
ParallelogramOpposite sides parallel and equal
TrapeziumOne pair of parallel sides

Level 3 — Diagonals (intro)

A diagonal joins two non-adjacent vertices.

  • Square: 2 diagonals (equal length)
  • Pentagon: 5 diagonals

Level 4 — Regular vs irregular

Regular polygon: all sides and all angles equal (e.g. equilateral triangle, square).

NCERT anchor: Math-Magic 4, Ch 11 — Fields and Fences; Ch 5 — The Way The World Looks (shapes from different views)

Worked example

How many diagonals does a rectangle have?

Step 1 — Label corners A, B, C, D.
Step 2 — Diagonals: AC and BD.
Step 3 — No other non-adjacent pairs.
Answer: **2 diagonals**

Classify a shape with 4 equal sides but no right angle

Step 1 — 4 sides → quadrilateral.
Step 2 — All sides equal → **rhombus**.
Step 3 — If angles were 90°, it would be a square.

Common mistakes

MistakeWhy it happensFix
Every quadrilateral is a rectangleIgnoring side equalityA rhombus may have no right angles
Pentagon has 4 sidesConfusing name with numberPenta = 5 sides
Diagonals of a rectangle are always equalTrue for rectangle but not all quadsTrue for rectangle/square; not for all trapeziums
Hexagon appears only in foreign shapesMissing local examplesBeehive cells in Anita and the Honeybees are hexagons

Quick check

  • How many sides in an octagon?
  • Name a quadrilateral with one pair of parallel sides.
  • How many diagonals in a square?
  • Stretch: A rangoli uses regular hexagons. How many sides do 5 such hexagons have in total? (30 — count sides separately, not shared edges)

Revision tip: Draw the quadrilateral family tree: square fits inside rhombus and rectangle — both inside parallelogram.

Interactive Exploration Suggestions (Drishti Live Worlds)

  • Use the platform-native live simulation or PhET-style tool for this topic (number line, Venn, physics playground, molecule builder, sensor dashboard, etc.).
  • Mirror / body / home activity: physically do the concept (count objects, measure, role-play) and photograph or describe for portfolio.
  • Voice or text reflection with AI Mentor: explain the concept to a younger student or family member.

AI Mentor Prompts (Socratic, Board-Adaptive)

  • "Explain this concept to a Class 6 student using one real example from an Indian home, school, market, or festival."
  • "What is one common mistake students make here, and how would you catch yourself making it?"
  • Stretch: "How does this connect to coding, robotics, money, health, environment, or a future career?"

Gamification, Portfolio & Parent Visibility

  • Complete the core practice + one extension activity (photo, table, short reflection, or mini-project) for base XP + topic badge.
  • 5-7 day streak or family discussion note = multiplier + visible artifact in parent/principal dashboard.
  • Best real-world application stories (anonymised) featured on class or national leaderboard.

Robotics, STEM & Future Skills Bridges

  • One hands-on project or measurement using the Drishti kit or household items that makes the concept physical.
  • Direct link to at least one Future Skill track (Money Management, Green Tech, Cyber Defenders, Micro-Entrepreneurship, AI Mastery, Sustainable Living, Personality Development).
  • Coding extension where relevant (simple script, simulation, or data logging).
