Turns (Clockwise & Anticlockwise)

Direction Sense: Turns (Clockwise & Anticlockwise)

Turns (Clockwise & Anticlockwise)

Turns (Clockwise & Anticlockwise)

What you'll learn

  • Understand clockwise and anticlockwise turns.
  • Work out the new direction after a quarter turn or half turn.
  • Combine multiple quarter turns to find the final direction.

Key concepts

Quarter turn clockwise

A quarter turn clockwise moves you one step in the order North to East to South to West to North.

Quarter turn anticlockwise

A quarter turn anticlockwise moves you one step in the reverse order: North to West to South to East to North.

Half turn

A half turn (two quarter turns in the same rotation direction) always brings you to face the exact opposite direction.

Three quarter turns

Three quarter turns clockwise gives the same result as one quarter turn anticlockwise (and vice versa).

Worked example

You are facing North. If you make a quarter turn clockwise, which direction do you face now?

Step 1 — Clockwise order: North to East to South to West.
Step 2 — One quarter turn from North lands on East.
Answer: **East**

You are facing East. If you make a half turn, which direction do you face now?

Step 1 — A half turn always faces the opposite direction.
Step 2 — Opposite of East is West.
Answer: **West**

Common mistakes

MistakeWhy it happensFix
Confusing quarter and half turnsNot counting the number of quarter-stepsRemember: half turn = 2 quarter turns
Wrong rotation directionMixing up clockwise and anticlockwiseClockwise follows a clock's hands: N-E-S-W
Losing count on multiple turnsNot tracking each quarter turn one at a timeMove one quarter turn at a time and note the new direction
Forgetting three-quarter shortcutNot knowing three quarter turns clockwise = one quarter anticlockwisePractise both ways to see they match

Quick check

  • You are facing South. If you make a quarter turn anticlockwise, which direction do you face now?
  • You are facing West. If you make a half turn, which direction do you face now?
  • You are facing North. If you make two quarter turns clockwise, which direction do you face now?
  • Stretch: You are facing East. If you make three quarter turns clockwise, which direction do you face now?

Revision tip: Stand up and physically turn your body to check quarter and half turns — it makes the direction changes easy to remember.
