Adverbs of Manner

• Adverbs of manner answer How? — they describe how an action is done.
• Many are formed by adding -ly to adjectives: slow → slowly, careful → carefully.
• Irregular forms: well (not goodly), fast, hard.
• To place adverbs naturally in CBSE Class 5 sentences — often after the verb or object.

Level 1 — How? and -ly formation

Verbal: Adverbs modify verbs — "She sings beautifully."

Symbolic: Verb + adverb of manner.

Rule: Most adjectives + -ly; y → ily (happy → happily); le → ly (simple → simply).

Level 2 — Irregular and position

Verbal: Well is adverb form of good — "She plays well."

Real-life: Teacher says "Read aloud clearly"; coach says "Kick the ball strongly."

Change adjective to adverb: The dog is loud. It barks ___.

Step 1 — loud → loudly.
Step 2 — It barks loudly.
Answer: loudly

Correct: She danced good at the function.

Step 1 — "good" describes verb "danced" → need adverb.
Step 2 — She danced well at the function.
Answer: well (not good)

• Form adverbs: careful, brave, sad.
• Fill: The child completed the test ___ (neat).
• Fix: He sings good.
• Stretch: Write four sentences — each with a different -ly adverb describing sports or play.
