Place Value Upto Lakhs

Place Value of Large Numbers: Place Value Upto Lakhs

Place Value Upto Lakhs

Place Value Upto Lakhs

What you'll learn

  • The place-value chart up to lakhs: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten-thousands, lakhs.
  • The difference between the digit, its place, and its place value.
  • To read and write 5-digit and 6-digit numbers using Indian place-value grouping (commas after 3 digits, then every 2 digits).

Key concepts

Level 1 — The place-value chart

LakhsTen-thousandsThousandsHundredsTensOnes
100000100001000100101

In the number 4,56,789: the digit 4 is in the lakhs place, 5 is in the ten-thousands place, 6 is in the thousands place, 7 is in the hundreds place, 8 is in the tens place, 9 is in the ones place.

Level 2 — Digit vs place value

Verbal: The digit is just the numeral (0–9). The place value is what that digit is worth because of where it sits.

Symbolic: In 4,56,789 the digit 5 has place value 5 × 10,000 = 50,000 (not just "5").

Level 3 — Indian comma placement

Indian numbering places the first comma after 3 digits from the right, then a comma every 2 digits: 4,56,789 (not 456,789).

Worked example

Find the place value of 7 in 3,47,215

Step 1 — Write the place-value chart under the number
Step 2 — 7 sits in the thousands place
Step 3 — Place value = 7 × 1,000 = 7,000
Answer: 7,000

Find the sum of the place values of 6 and 2 in 6,58,204

6 is in the lakhs place → 6 × 100,000 = 600,000
2 is in the hundreds place → 2 × 100 = 200
Sum = 600,000 + 200 = 600,200

Common mistakes

MistakeWhy it happensFix
Saying "the place value of 7 is 7"Confusing digit with place valueAlways multiply the digit by its place's value
Miscounting the place from the rightLosing track in a 6-digit numberAlways start counting places from the ones digit (rightmost)
Wrong comma placementUsing the international 3-3-3 groupingIndian system: 3 digits, then groups of 2 (e.g. 12,34,567)

Quick check

  • In 2,58,943, what is the place value of 8?
  • In 9,04,167, which digit is in the ten-thousands place?
  • Write 5,00,000 + 30,000 + 2,000 + 100 + 40 + 6 as one number.
  • Stretch: What is the greatest 6-digit number you can make using the digits 3, 0, 7, 9, 1, 5 exactly once?

Revision tip: Draw the place-value chart from memory each morning until the order lakhs → ten-thousands → thousands → hundreds → tens → ones is automatic.
