Integers: Core
Core
Integers (NCERT Ch. 6)
What you'll learn
- Represent integers (…, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, …) on a number line.
- Compare and order integers using the number line.
- Add and subtract integers using number-line rules.
- Understand real-life uses: temperature below zero, profit/loss, floors below ground level.
Key concepts
- Integers include positive numbers, negative numbers, and zero.
- On the number line, numbers to the right are greater, numbers to the left are smaller.
- Adding a positive integer moves right; adding a negative integer moves left.
- Subtracting an integer is the same as adding its opposite: a − b = a + (−b).
- Every negative integer is less than every positive integer and less than 0.
Worked example
Find (−5) + 8 using the number line.
Start at -5. Move 8 steps to the right (adding a positive number).
-5 → -4 → -3 → -2 → -1 → 0 → 1 → 2 → 3
Answer: 3
Common mistakes
- Thinking −8 is greater than −3 (it's smaller — further left on the number line).
- Forgetting the sign when subtracting: 4 − 9 = 4 + (−9) = −5, not 5.
- Mixing up direction of movement for addition vs subtraction.
Quick check
- Which is greater: −7 or −2?
- Compute (−4) − (−6).
