Core

Fractions and Decimals: Core

Core

Fractions and Decimals (NCERT Ch. 2)

What you'll learn

  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions (proper, improper, mixed).
  • Multiply and divide decimals, including by powers of 10.
  • Convert between fractions and decimals.

Key concepts

  1. To multiply fractions, multiply numerators together and denominators together, then simplify.
  2. To divide by a fraction, multiply by its reciprocal (flip the second fraction).
  3. To multiply decimals, multiply as whole numbers, then place the decimal point by counting total decimal places.
  4. To divide a decimal by 10, 100, 1000, shift the decimal point left by 1, 2, 3 places respectively.

Worked example

Compute: 2/3 ÷ 4/5

2/3 ÷ 4/5 = 2/3 x 5/4 = 10/12 = 5/6

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to flip (reciprocate) the second fraction when dividing.
  • Misplacing the decimal point after multiplying (always count total decimal digits from both numbers).
  • Adding/subtracting fractions without a common denominator first.

Quick check

  • Compute 1/2 + 1/3.
  • Compute 2.5 x 0.4.
