Add With Pictures

Add With Pictures

NCERT anchor: NCERT Joyful Mathematics Class 1 — Chapter 3: Mango Treat (picture stories)

What you'll learn

  • Solve picture addition stories where objects are shown in two groups.
  • Write a number sentence (+ and =) from a picture or word story.
  • Add groups up to sum 20 using mangoes, toys, and school supplies.

Key concepts

1. Read the picture story

Level 1 (Verbal): "3 birds on a branch, 2 more fly in" → how many birds now?

Level 2 (Symbolic): Write 3 + 2 = 5 under the picture.

Visual: Cross out nothing — count all objects in both groups.

2. Two steps: understand, then add

First say what each group shows, then join and count (or count on).

3. Label your answer

Always include what you counted: "5 birds," not just "5.

Worked example

Mango Treat — plates at a picnic

Step 1 — Plate A has 6 mangoes; Plate B has 5 mangoes.
Step 2 — Story: "6 mangoes and 5 more mangoes."
Step 3 — Count on from 6: 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 → total 11.
Step 4 — Write 6 + 5 = 11 mangoes.
Answer: 11 mangoes in all.

Common mistakes

MistakeWhyFix
Counting only one groupMissing the 'join' ideaCircle both groups before counting
Wrong number sentence orderWriting 5 + 6 = 11 is fine, but story order helpsMatch the sentence to how the picture is read left to right
Forgetting the unitWriting 11 without 'mangoes'Always say what the number counts

Quick check

  • Draw 4 diyas and 3 more. Write the addition sentence.
  • Picture shows 7 balloons and 2 balloons. Total?
  • Read: 5 crayons + 5 crayons. What is the sum?
  • Stretch: A rangoli has 8 red dots and 7 yellow dots. How many dots altogether?

Revision tip: For every picture problem, say the story aloud first, then write numbers.

Interactive Exploration Suggestions (Drishti Live Worlds)

  • Use the platform-native live simulation or PhET-style tool for this topic (number line, Venn, physics playground, molecule builder, sensor dashboard, etc.).
  • Mirror / body / home activity: physically do the concept (count objects, measure, role-play) and photograph or describe for portfolio.
  • Voice or text reflection with AI Mentor: explain the concept to a younger student or family member.

AI Mentor Prompts (Socratic, Board-Adaptive)

  • "Explain this concept to a Class 6 student using one real example from an Indian home, school, market, or festival."
  • "What is one common mistake students make here, and how would you catch yourself making it?"
  • Stretch: "How does this connect to coding, robotics, money, health, environment, or a future career?"

Gamification, Portfolio & Parent Visibility

  • Complete the core practice + one extension activity (photo, table, short reflection, or mini-project) for base XP + topic badge.
  • 5-7 day streak or family discussion note = multiplier + visible artifact in parent/principal dashboard.
  • Best real-world application stories (anonymised) featured on class or national leaderboard.

Robotics, STEM & Future Skills Bridges

  • One hands-on project or measurement using the Drishti kit or household items that makes the concept physical.
  • Direct link to at least one Future Skill track (Money Management, Green Tech, Cyber Defenders, Micro-Entrepreneurship, AI Mastery, Sustainable Living, Personality Development).
  • Coding extension where relevant (simple script, simulation, or data logging).
