Before After

Comprehensive notes, formulas, and practice questions for Before After.

Before After

Before and After

NCERT anchor: NCERT Joyful Mathematics Class 1 — Chapter 8: Fun with Numbers (number neighbours)

What you'll learn

  • Find the number just before and just after any number up to 20.
  • Use a number line to see neighbours — the number to the left is before; to the right is after.
  • Apply before/after in queue and ticket-number situations at school and festivals.

Key concepts

1. Just before (predecessor)

Level 1 (Verbal): The number you say one step back when counting down.

Level 2 (Symbolic): Before n = n − 1 (for numbers above 1).

Visual: On a number line, the point left of 7 is 6 — so 6 is before 7.

2. Just after (successor)

Verbal: The next number when counting up.

Symbolic: After n = n + 1.

Visual: The point right of 7 is 8 — so 8 is after 7.

3. Special cases at the ends

  • Before 1 — we do not use 0 in this chapter's counting set.
  • After 20 is 21 — useful preview for later grades.

Worked example

Cricket scoreboard: what comes before and after 13 runs?

Step 1 — Locate 13 on a number line (or draw one from 10 to 16).
Step 2 — Move one step left → 12. So **12 is before 13**.
Step 3 — Move one step right from 13 → 14. So **14 is after 13**.
Step 4 — Say aloud: "Twelve, thirteen, fourteen."
Answer: before 13 → 12; after 13 → 14.

Common mistakes

MistakeWhyFix
Before 10 is 9 but student writes 11Confusing before with afterBefore = go left (smaller); after = go right (bigger)
Skipping numbers on the lineMemorising without visualisingDraw a number line and point each step
Saying 'before 1 is 0' in this unitZero not yet in focusAt Class 1 level, focus on 1–20; before 1 is not needed here

Quick check

  • What number comes just before 9? Just after 9?
  • I am standing at 16 on a hopscotch grid. What is my next hop forward?
  • Ticket number 11 — what was the ticket before it?
  • Stretch: A queue has numbers 18, 19, 20. What number comes after the last person? What comes before 18?

Revision tip: Pick any number 2–19 daily; say its before-and-after neighbours without peeking at a chart.

Interactive Exploration Suggestions (Drishti Live Worlds)

  • Use the platform-native live simulation or PhET-style tool for this topic (number line, Venn, physics playground, molecule builder, sensor dashboard, etc.).
  • Mirror / body / home activity: physically do the concept (count objects, measure, role-play) and photograph or describe for portfolio.
  • Voice or text reflection with AI Mentor: explain the concept to a younger student or family member.

AI Mentor Prompts (Socratic, Board-Adaptive)

  • "Explain this concept to a Class 6 student using one real example from an Indian home, school, market, or festival."
  • "What is one common mistake students make here, and how would you catch yourself making it?"
  • Stretch: "How does this connect to coding, robotics, money, health, environment, or a future career?"

Gamification, Portfolio & Parent Visibility

  • Complete the core practice + one extension activity (photo, table, short reflection, or mini-project) for base XP + topic badge.
  • 5-7 day streak or family discussion note = multiplier + visible artifact in parent/principal dashboard.
  • Best real-world application stories (anonymised) featured on class or national leaderboard.

Robotics, STEM & Future Skills Bridges

  • One hands-on project or measurement using the Drishti kit or household items that makes the concept physical.
  • Direct link to at least one Future Skill track (Money Management, Green Tech, Cyber Defenders, Micro-Entrepreneurship, AI Mastery, Sustainable Living, Personality Development).
  • Coding extension where relevant (simple script, simulation, or data logging).

NEP 2020 & Full Education OS Alignment

This material emphasises experiential "learning by doing", competency (apply/create/analyse), vocational exposure, critical thinking, and multidisciplinary connections. Designed to feed live worlds, AI Mentor (with memory), gamification, robotics, parent analytics, and future skills — not just exam prep.

Portfolio Evidence Idea: Your photo/table/reflection/project + one sentence on "How this helps me in real life or a possible future path."
