Sorting By Shape

Skill focus: Shape grouping activities that build on NCERT Joyful Mathematics Class 1 — Chapter 1: Shapes and Space.

• Group everyday objects that share the same shape.
• Tell round, square/rectangle, and triangle objects apart.
• Pick a new object that fits a shape group.

1. Grouping is not the same as a pattern

Level 1 (Verbal): a ball, an orange, and a coin are all round.

Level 2 (Symbolic): Group name: Round → members: ball, orange, coin.

Visual: Put all round-object pictures inside one hoop, squares in another.

2. Shape, not size

A small coin and a big wheel are both round — size does not matter for this group.

3. Checking a new item

Look at the outline of the object, not what it is used for.

Which one joins the round group?

Step 1 — Group shown: ball, orange, coin.
Step 2 — Rule: these are all round like a circle.
Step 3 — Check options: bangle (round), book (rectangle), door (rectangle).
Answer: bangle joins the group.

• Book, window, box are square/rectangle. Which joins: table top or ball?
• Party hat, rooftop, pizza slice are triangles. Which joins: birthday hat or coin?
• Wheel, clock, plate are circles. Which joins: bangle or ruler?
• Stretch: Find one round and one square object in your school bag.
