Inside And Outside

Spatial Reasoning: Inside And Outside

Inside And Outside

Inside And Outside

NCERT anchor: NCERT Joyful Mathematics Class 1 — Chapter 1: Shapes and Space (inside-outside awareness)

What you'll learn

  • Tell inside from outside.
  • Understand that one thing can be inside another, which is inside a third thing.
  • Answer where an object is after it is nested in containers.

Key concepts

1. Inside means contained

Level 1 (Verbal): Toys kept inside the box are contained by the box.

Level 2 (Symbolic): Object A inside Object B means B contains A.

Visual: Draw a small circle (ball) inside a bigger circle (box).

2. Outside means not contained

If children play in the garden, not in the house, they are outside the house.

3. Nesting — inside an inside

A pencil can be inside a pencil box, and that pencil box can be inside a school bag. The pencil is then inside both.

Worked example

Where is the candy?

Step 1 — The candy is inside a small box.
Step 2 — The small box is inside a big box.
Step 3 — The big box is inside the cupboard.
Answer: the candy is inside the cupboard, inside the big box, inside the small box.
