Left And Right

Spatial Reasoning: Left And Right

Left And Right

Left And Right

NCERT anchor: NCERT Joyful Mathematics Class 1 — Chapter 1: Shapes and Space (left-right awareness)

What you'll learn

  • Tell left and right on your own body.
  • Find which object is on the left or right in a row.
  • Track how left and right change when something moves.

Key concepts

1. Left and right on your body

Level 1 (Verbal): Raise your right hand — it is on the right side of your body.

Level 2 (Symbolic): Right hand → right side; left hand → left side.

Visual: Stand facing forward and tap your left shoulder, then your right shoulder.

2. Left and right in a row

In a row of toys, the first one you see from the left side is on the left; the last one is on the right.

3. Left and right can change

If something moves from the right side to the left side, its position changes — but left is still left and right is still right.

Worked example

Which toy is on the right?

Step 1 — Row: car (left), doll (middle), ball (right).
Step 2 — The right side is the last position in the row.
Step 3 — The ball is in the last position.
Answer: the ball is on the right.
