Story Comprehension

NCERT anchor

English (Mridang) — short moral stories (the thirsty crow, the tortoise and the hare) build understanding of characters and the main idea.

What you'll learn

  • How to find the main characters and main idea of a short story.
  • How to answer simple detail questions (who, what, how many).
  • How to spot the lesson or moral a short story teaches.

Key concepts

Verbal: The main idea is what the story is mostly about. A detail is one small fact inside the story.

Symbolic: Story → Characters + Events + Main idea/lesson.

Level 1 — Finding characters and details

'Tom the dog found a red ball.' → Character: Tom. Detail: a red ball.

Level 1 — Main idea

A short story about a crow using pebbles to drink water is mainly about a clever crow.

Level 2 — Lessons from stories

The ant and grasshopper story teaches us to work and save for later.

Level 2 — Detail vs main idea

A detail is one small fact; the main idea covers the whole story in one sentence.

Worked example

The tortoise and the hare had a race. The hare slept on the way, but the tortoise kept walking. Who won the race?

Step 1 — Read the whole passage.
Step 2 — Find who kept going without stopping: the tortoise.
Step 3 — The one who reaches the end first wins.
Answer: the tortoise
