Joyful Mathematics 2 — Fun with Numbers / Give and Take. Recognising Indian coins and notes and matching them to prices connects to the everyday buying-selling stories in these chapters.
What you'll learn
- To recognise Indian coins (₹1, ₹2, ₹5, ₹10) and notes (₹10, ₹20, ₹50, ₹100).
- To match a coin/note to the exact price of a small item.
- To find how many small coins/notes make a bigger amount.
Key concepts
Verbal: Coins are used for small amounts; notes are used for bigger amounts.
Symbolic: ₹1 + ₹2 + ₹2 = ₹5. Five ₹10 notes = ₹50.
Level 1 — Matching price to money
A ₹5 chocolate is paid for exactly with one ₹5 coin.
Level 2 — Equivalence
How many ₹10 notes make ₹50? ₹50 ÷ ₹10 = 5 notes.
Level 3 — Combining different coins/notes
One ₹10 + one ₹5 + one ₹2 = ₹17.
Worked example
How many ₹5 coins make ₹20?
Step 1 — Divide: 20 ÷ 5
Step 2 — Count in 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20 → 4 coins
Answer: 4 coins of ₹5
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Why | Fix |

| Confusing coin value with its size | Some smaller coins are worth more | Always check the number printed on the coin |
| Adding coins and notes incorrectly | Skipping a value | List each coin/note value before adding |
| Using the wrong note for a small price | Notes are for exact or bigger amounts | Pick the smallest note/coin that fits |
