Joyful Mathematics 2 — Fun with Numbers / Rani's Gift. Bundles of ten and loose ones match the tens-and-ones charts in Fun with Numbers and gift-counting stories in Rani's Gift.
What you'll learn
- How a two-digit number is built from tens and ones (CBSE Class 2).
- That the position of a digit tells its value — 3 in 34 means thirty, not three.
- To read and write numbers up to 100 using bundles of ten and loose ones.
Key concepts
Verbal: Say a two-digit number in Indian English: 47 is forty-seven — four tens and seven ones, not "four-seven".
Symbolic: 47 = 4 tens + 7 ones → 40 + 7 = 47. Chart: Tens | Ones → 4 | 7.
Level 1 — Tens and ones
Every number from 10 to 99 has a tens digit (left) and a ones digit (right).
| Number | Tens | Ones | In words |
|---|---|---|---|
| 47 | 4 | 7 | forty-seven |
| 90 | 9 | 0 | ninety |
| 08 → 8 | 0 | 8 | eight (single digit) |
Level 1 — Bundles of ten
10 loose sticks can be tied into 1 bundle of ten. 3 bundles + 4 loose = 34.
Level 1 — Place-value chart (Indian style)
Tens | Ones
5 | 6 → 56
Level 2 — Zero as placeholder
In 40, the 0 in ones place means no loose ones — only 4 tens.
Level 2 — Real life (India)
- A ₹10 note is one "ten"; ₹47 in coins might be 4 tens + 7 ones.
- Class register roll numbers like 23 and 56 use tens and ones.
Worked example
Riya has 6 bundles of 10 pencils and 2 loose pencils. How many pencils?
Step 1 — 6 bundles = 6 tens = 60
Step 2 — Add 2 loose ones → 60 + 2 = 62
Step 3 — Write in chart: Tens = 6, Ones = 2
Answer: 62 pencils
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Reading 56 as "five-six" only | Ignoring place | Say fifty-six — 5 tens |
| Thinking 30 > 40 because 3 > 4 | Comparing digits, not values | 40 has 4 tens |
| Writing 7 tens as 07 in tens column | Confusion with zero | Tens digit is 7, ones is 0 → 70 |
Quick check
- In 83, which digit is in the tens place?
- Write seven tens and five ones as a number.
- How many ones are in 1 ten?
Stretch: Ravi has ₹35 in ₹10 notes and ₹5 coins. How many tens and ones? Write the number.
Revision tip: Use ₹10 notes and loose ₹1 coins at home — bundle ten coins into one "ten" to read any two-digit number aloud.
