Skip Counting
NCERT anchor
Joyful Mathematics 2 — Patterns Around Us / Fun with Numbers. Skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s appears on hundred charts and pattern strips in Patterns Around Us.
What you'll learn
- To count forward by 2s, 5s, and 10s without counting every number.
- How skip counting helps in money, pairs, and groups.
- To find missing numbers in a skip-count pattern up to 100.
Key concepts
Verbal: Count aloud in jumps: ten, twenty, thirty… — each step adds one ten without counting every number.
Symbolic: By 10s: 10, 20, 30… Rule: n → n + 10. By 5s: 5, 10, 15… Rule: n → n + 5.
Level 1 — Count by 10s
10, 20, 30, 40, …, 100 — each step adds one ten.
Level 1 — Count by 5s
5, 10, 15, 20, …, 100 — useful for counting ₹5 coins.
Level 1 — Count by 2s
2, 4, 6, 8, … — counting pairs of socks or shoes.
Level 2 — Finding the rule
Look at the gap between numbers: 20, 30, 40 → add 10 each time.
Level 2 — Real life
- ₹10 notes: ₹10, ₹20, ₹30…
- Auto-rickshaw fare increasing by ₹5.
Worked example
Skip count by 5s starting from 25. What are the next three numbers?
Step 1 — Start at 25
Step 2 — Add 5: 25 → 30 → 35 → 40
Step 3 — Next three after 25: 30, 35, 40
Answer: 30, 35, 40
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 10, 11, 12 when asked to count by 10s | Counting by 1s | Each jump adds 10 |
| Skipping 50 in 5s pattern | Losing track | 45, 50, 55 |
| Starting at 0 for "by 2s to 20" | Unsure of start | 0, 2, 4, … or 2, 4, 6, … both valid if stated |
Quick check
- Count by 10s from 40 to 80.
- What number comes after 55 when counting by 5s?
- Fill: 12, 14, 16, __, __
Stretch: Auto fare is ₹10, ₹15, ₹20… What is the rule? What fare comes after ₹45?
Revision tip: Clap on every fifth count while counting ₹5 coins — your ears and hands learn the pattern together.

Interactive Exploration Suggestions (Drishti Live Worlds)
- Use the platform-native live simulation or PhET-style tool for this topic (number line, Venn, physics playground, molecule builder, sensor dashboard, etc.).
- Mirror / body / home activity: physically do the concept (count objects, measure, role-play) and photograph or describe for portfolio.
- Voice or text reflection with AI Mentor: explain the concept to a younger student or family member.
AI Mentor Prompts (Socratic, Board-Adaptive)
- "Explain this concept to a Class 6 student using one real example from an Indian home, school, market, or festival."
- "What is one common mistake students make here, and how would you catch yourself making it?"
- Stretch: "How does this connect to coding, robotics, money, health, environment, or a future career?"
Gamification, Portfolio & Parent Visibility
- Complete the core practice + one extension activity (photo, table, short reflection, or mini-project) for base XP + topic badge.
- 5-7 day streak or family discussion note = multiplier + visible artifact in parent/principal dashboard.
- Best real-world application stories (anonymised) featured on class or national leaderboard.
