Grouping & Classification — Group by Use

NCERT anchor

Joyful Mathematics 2Shapes Around Us and everyday-object talk. Grouping by how we use things builds on naming objects around us.

What you will learn

  • Objects can be grouped by what we use them for, not how they look.
  • Ask: what job does this thing do?
  • Things with the same job belong in the same group.

Key concepts

Verbal: Think about the use of each object — to write, to eat, to cut, to wear. Group objects that share the same use.

Symbolic: Pen, pencil, crayon → used to write. Spoon, fork → used to eat. Different use → different group.

Level 1 — Getting started

ExampleAnswerWhy
pen, pencil, crayonused to writeAll make marks on paper
spoon, fork, plateused to eatAll help us eat food
scissors, knifeused to cutBoth have a cutting edge

Level 1 — Practice idea

Look around your school bag — group items by whether you write, cut, or measure with them.

Level 2 — Going further

Some objects have more than one use — a ruler can measure and also draw straight lines. Pick the main use.

Indian real life

At an Indian kitchen, a thali groups spoons and plates for eating, while a knife stays with cutting tools — same idea as grouping by use.

Worked example

Group these by use: pencil, eraser, sharpener, spoon

Step 1 — Pencil, eraser, sharpener are all used for **writing and correcting writing**
Step 2 — Spoon is used for **eating**, a different job
Step 3 — So pencil, eraser, sharpener form one group; spoon is the odd one by use
Answer: pencil, eraser, sharpener are one group; spoon is different

Common mistakes

MistakeWhyFix
Grouping by colour instead of useColour is not the same as jobAsk what is it used for
Ignoring objects with two usesObjects can do more than one jobPick the most common use
Mixing up similar-looking toolsScissors and knife look different but both cutFocus on the action, not the shape

Quick check

  • Group: comb, hairbrush, toothbrush, spoon — which one does not belong by use?
  • Group: umbrella, raincoat, cap — what use do they share?
  • Name two things used to write and two things used to eat.

Stretch: List 4 things used for cleaning and 4 things used for writing.

Revision tip: Make a chart with columns: Write, Eat, Cut, Wear — sort objects from your bag into it.
