Evaporation
Comprehensive notes, formulas, and practice questions for Evaporation.
Evaporation
Evaporation in the Water Cycle
What you'll learn
- Define evaporation and where it occurs naturally.
- Identify factors that speed up evaporation: heat, wind, and surface area.
- Connect evaporation to drying clothes and puddles disappearing.
- Relate evaporation to monsoon preparation in India.
Key concepts
Level 1 - Meaning of evaporation
Evaporation is the change of liquid water into water vapor from the surface. It happens at room temperature too, but faster in heat.
Level 2 - Factors affecting evaporation
Higher temperature, moving air, and larger exposed area increase evaporation rate. Shallow trays dry faster than deep bowls.
Level 3 - Daily observations
Wet clothes dry faster on sunny windy days. Rainwater puddles disappear after some hours due to evaporation. Sweat evaporation cools our body.
Level 4 - Indian context
In summer across India, strong sunlight causes fast evaporation from lakes and soil. Farmers notice faster water loss from fields in hot dry winds. Salt pans in Gujarat use evaporation to collect salt from seawater. Evaporation is the first major step in water cycle before cloud formation.

Worked example
Clothes drying comparison
Step 1 - Hang one wet cloth in sunlight and one in shade.
Step 2 - Keep both under similar wind conditions.
Step 3 - Check after one hour.
Step 4 - Sunlit cloth becomes drier sooner.
Answer: Higher temperature speeds evaporation.
Plate vs cup water test
Step 1 - Put equal water in a plate and a narrow cup.
Step 2 - Leave both in same room.
Step 3 - Measure remaining water after a day.
Step 4 - Plate shows more loss due to larger surface area.
Answer: Greater exposed area increases evaporation.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Why it happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Water disappears completely | Vapor is invisible | Water changes state to vapor, not destroyed |
| Evaporation needs boiling | Boiling and evaporation mixed | Evaporation occurs below boiling point |
| Only sunlight causes evaporation | Heat source narrowed | Any warmth and airflow can increase it |
| Evaporation and condensation are same | Both involve water cycle confusion | Evaporation is liquid to gas; condensation is gas to liquid |
Quick check
- What is evaporation?
- Which dries faster: water in plate or bottle mouth?
- Why do puddles disappear after rain?
- Name one Indian industry using evaporation.
- Stretch: Track drying times of wet cloth on windy vs non-windy days and explain the difference.
Revision tip: Evaporation starts from surface and gets faster with heat, wind, and larger area.
