Basic Directions

Direction Sense: Basic Directions

Basic Directions

Basic Directions

What you'll learn

  • Recall the four main directions: North, East, South, West.
  • Understand what happens when you turn left or right.
  • Find the opposite direction of a given direction.

Key concepts

The compass order

Going clockwise (like a clock's hands), the order is: North to East to South to West to back to North.

Turning right

Turning right moves you one step clockwise in this order. For example, facing North and turning right makes you face East.

Turning left

Turning left moves you one step anticlockwise (the reverse order): North to West to South to East to back to North.

Opposite directions

North and South are opposite. East and West are opposite.

NCERT anchor: CBSE Class 4 logical reasoning; EVS 4 directions and maps

Worked example

If you are facing North and you turn to your right, which direction do you now face?

Step 1 — Turning right moves clockwise: North to East.
Answer: **East**

Which direction is exactly opposite to East?

Step 1 — East and West are opposite directions.
Answer: **West**

Common mistakes

MistakeWhy it happensFix
Mixing up left and rightNot remembering which way is clockwiseRemember: right = clockwise, left = anticlockwise
Wrong compass orderForgetting the N-E-S-W sequenceRecite "North, East, South, West" like clock positions 12, 3, 6, 9
Guessing the oppositeNot pairing directions correctlyPair them: North-South, East-West
Losing track after two turnsNot updating the direction step by stepSolve one turn at a time

Quick check

  • If you are facing South and you turn to your left, which direction do you now face?
  • Which direction is exactly opposite to North?
  • If you are facing West and you turn to your right, which direction do you now face?
  • Stretch: If you face East, turn right, then turn right again, which direction do you face?

Revision tip: Draw a compass with N, E, S, W on paper and physically turn it to check your answers.
