What you'll learn
- Understand that rhyming words end with the same sound.
- Find a word that rhymes with a given word.
- Build simple rhyme pairs: cat–hat, sun–fun.
Key concepts
1. What is a rhyme?
Level 1 (Verbal): Two words rhyme when their ending sound matches — cat and hat both end in -at.
Level 2 (Symbolic): c-at, h-at — same last part, different first letter.
Visual: Picture of a cat sitting on a mat — say both words slowly, listen to the end.
2. Finding a rhyme pair
Verbal: Say the word slowly. Change only the first sound to make a new rhyming word.
Example: pan → change p to f → fan. pan and fan rhyme.
3. Rhymes in poems
Verbal: Poems often end lines with rhyming words to sound musical.
Example: "The cat sat on the mat." — cat and mat rhyme.
Worked example
Finding a word that rhymes with "hen"
Step 1 — Say hen slowly: h-en.
Step 2 — Keep the -en sound.
Step 3 — Try new first sounds: p-en, t-en, d-en.
Step 4 — pen, ten, den all rhyme with hen.
Answer: pen (or ten, den) rhymes with hen.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Matching first letter instead of ending | Rhyme is about the ending sound | Listen to the last sound, not the first letter |
| Picking a word with a similar meaning | Rhyme is about sound, not meaning | Say both words aloud and compare endings |
| Confusing rhyme with spelling | Some rhymes look different but sound alike | Say the words out loud to check |
Quick check
- Which word rhymes with cat: dog or hat?
- Give one word that rhymes with sun.
- Do pig and wig rhyme?
- Stretch: Make three rhyme pairs of your own.
Revision tip: Say a word out loud and clap for every rhyming word a friend can find in one minute.
