Number Patterns
NCERT anchor: NCERT Joyful Mathematics Class 1 — Chapter 8: Fun with Numbers (+1 and +2 patterns)
What you'll learn
- Continue +1 patterns: 2, 3, 4, 5…
- Continue +2 patterns: 2, 4, 6, 8…
- Use number line hops to verify the rule.
Key concepts
1. Add 1 each time
Level 1 (Verbal): Counting up by one — 7, 8, 9, 10.
Level 2 (Symbolic): Rule: +1 → next = previous + 1.
Visual: Hop one step right on number line each time.
2. Add 2 each time
Verbal: Skip one number — 3, 5, 7, 9 (odd numbers pattern).
Visual: Hop two steps on number line.
3. Find the rule first
Look at gap between numbers before continuing.
Worked example
Cricket runs per over: +2 pattern
Step 1 — Overs show runs: 2, 4, 6, 8, ?
Step 2 — Gaps: +2 each time → rule is **add 2**.
Step 3 — 8 + 2 = **10** runs next over (if pattern holds).
Step 4 — Check on number line: hop by 2 from 8 → 10.
Answer: 10.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Always assume +1 | Pattern may be +2 or +3 | Check difference between neighbours |
| Writing 9 after 8 in +2 pattern | Applied wrong rule | 8 + 2 = 10, not 9 |
| Starting rule from wrong end | Use last two numbers | 6 and 8 → difference 2 |
Quick check
- Continue: 5, 6, 7, ?
- Continue: 10, 12, 14, ?
- What is the rule in 1, 2, 3, 4?
- Stretch: Pattern 1, 3, 5, 7 — what is the next number and the rule?
Revision tip: Write the +1 or +2 rule in margin before filling blanks.
