Tense Revision for Class 10
What you'll learn
- Revise all 12 tense forms and their time markers.
- Choose tense using since/for, already, yet, just, when, while.
- Fix present perfect vs simple past errors.
- Align tenses in conditional and time clauses.
Key concepts
- Simple present — truth/habit.
- Present continuous — action now / temporary.
- Present perfect — unfinished time / result now.
- Present perfect continuous — duration till now.
- Simple past — finished past with time word.
- Past continuous — background action.
- Past perfect — earlier of two past events.
- Future forms — will/shall; going to; present continuous for fixed plan.
- Conditionals — If it rains, we will cancel (type 1).
- Errors — I have seen him last week → saw.
Worked example
Choose tense: She ___ (work) here since 2021.
Step 1 — **since + point** → present perfect.
Answer: She **has worked** / **has been working** here since 2021.
Both acceptable; continuous emphasises duration.
Common mistakes
- Since with simple past.
- Will in both clauses of type-1 conditional.
- Past perfect overuse where simple past enough.
- Static verbs in continuous (knowing → know).
