Transformation

Active/passive, direct/indirect, and combined sentences.

Transformation

Sentence Transformation

What you'll learn

  • Transform sentences: active ↔ passive, direct ↔ indirect speech.
  • Change degree of comparison, sentence type, voice without altering meaning.
  • Apply modal changes and pronoun/time-place shifts in reported speech.
  • Preserve tense logic and punctuation.

Key concepts

  1. Active → Passive — object becomes subject; be + V3; by-agent optional.
  2. Passive → Active — identify agent; convert to active verb.
  3. Direct speech — exact words in inverted commas.
  4. Indirect speech — reporting verb + conjunction (that/if/whether) + backshift.
  5. Questions in indirect — if/whether + statement order.
  6. Imperatives — told/ordered + to-infinitive.
  7. Modals in reported speech — may→might; will→would; can→could.
  8. Time/place — today→that day; here→there; now→then.
  9. Negative questions — careful with did not / does not.
  10. Combine sentences — using although, because, unless, as soon as.

Worked example

Transform to indirect: He said, 'I am busy now.'

Step 1 — Reporting verb past: said.
Step 2 — Backshift: am → was; now → then.
Answer: He said **that he was busy then**.
Remove inverted commas; add **that**.

Common mistakes

  • He said that I am busy (pronoun not changed from speaker's view).
  • He said me (say does not take indirect object like tell).
  • Forgetting whether in yes/no questions.
  • Order of words wrong in indirect question.

Quick check

  • Active: The teacher praised Rahul. → Passive?
  • Change to comparative: No other boy is as tall as Arjun.
  • Indirect: She asked, 'Where do you live?'
  • Join with although: He was tired. He finished the work.

Interactive Exploration Suggestions (Drishti Live Worlds)

  • Use the platform-native live simulation or PhET-style tool for this topic (number line, Venn, physics playground, molecule builder, sensor dashboard, etc.).
  • Mirror / body / home activity: physically do the concept (count objects, measure, role-play) and photograph or describe for portfolio.
  • Voice or text reflection with AI Mentor: explain the concept to a younger student or family member.

AI Mentor Prompts (Socratic, Board-Adaptive)

  • "Explain this concept to a Class 6 student using one real example from an Indian home, school, market, or festival."
  • "What is one common mistake students make here, and how would you catch yourself making it?"
  • Stretch: "How does this connect to coding, robotics, money, health, environment, or a future career?"

Gamification, Portfolio & Parent Visibility

  • Complete the core practice + one extension activity (photo, table, short reflection, or mini-project) for base XP + topic badge.
  • 5-7 day streak or family discussion note = multiplier + visible artifact in parent/principal dashboard.
  • Best real-world application stories (anonymised) featured on class or national leaderboard.

Robotics, STEM & Future Skills Bridges

  • One hands-on project or measurement using the Drishti kit or household items that makes the concept physical.
  • Direct link to at least one Future Skill track (Money Management, Green Tech, Cyber Defenders, Micro-Entrepreneurship, AI Mastery, Sustainable Living, Personality Development).
  • Coding extension where relevant (simple script, simulation, or data logging).
