Food: Where Does it Come From
Food: Where Does it Come From?
What you'll learn
- Plant and animal sources of food.
- Parts of plants we eat.
- How food ingredients are classified.
- Concept of producers, consumers and decomposers.
Key concepts
Why we need food
- Food provides energy for all body activities.
- Food provides nutrients needed for growth, repair and protection.
- Main nutrients: carbohydrates (energy), proteins (growth/repair), fats (energy store), vitamins & minerals (protection), water (transport).
Plant sources of food
Plants are the primary source of food for almost all living things.
Parts of plants used as food:
| Plant part | Examples |
|---|---|
| Root | Carrot, radish, turnip, beetroot, sweet potato |
| Stem | Potato (tuber), sugarcane, ginger |
| Leaf | Spinach, lettuce, cabbage, curry leaves |
| Flower | Cauliflower, broccoli, banana flower |
| Fruit | Mango, apple, tomato, brinjal |
| Seed | Wheat, rice, maize, peas, lentils |
| Seed oil | Sunflower oil, groundnut oil, mustard oil |
- Cereals (wheat, rice, maize): seeds used as staple food.
- Pulses (lentils, peas, chickpeas, soybean): rich in protein.
- Vegetables: leaves, roots, stems, flowers.
- Fruits: ripened ovary of plant; fleshy and sweet.
- Spices: dried seeds, bark or roots used for flavour (pepper, turmeric, cardamom, cinnamon).
Animal sources of food
| Animal product | Source animal | Nutrients |
|---|---|---|
| Milk | Cow, buffalo, goat | Protein, fat, calcium |
| Cheese / paneer / butter | Made from milk | Protein, fat |
| Eggs | Hen, duck, quail | Protein, fat, vitamins |
| Meat (chicken, mutton, beef, pork) | Various animals | Protein, fat |
| Fish and seafood | Fish, prawn, crab | Protein, omega-3 fats |
| Honey | Honeybees | Carbohydrates (sugars) |
Eating habits of animals
| Category | Description | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Herbivores | Eat only plants | Cow, goat, rabbit, horse, deer |
| Carnivores | Eat only animals | Lion, tiger, eagle, shark |
| Omnivores | Eat both plants and animals | Human, bear, crow, pig, dog |
Ingredients and food preparation
- Ingredients: the various food items mixed to prepare a dish.
- Different regions use different plant and animal ingredients in their traditional recipes.
- Processed foods: foods that have been changed from their natural state — baking bread (wheat → bread), churning butter (cream → butter), making oil (seeds → oil).
Producers, consumers and decomposers
| Group | Who | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Producers | Green plants | Make their own food by photosynthesis using sunlight |
| Consumers | Animals (and humans) | Cannot make food; eat producers or other consumers |
| Decomposers | Bacteria, fungi | Break down dead organisms; recycle nutrients |
Food chain (simple example): Grass → Grasshopper → Frog → Snake → Eagle.
- Energy flows along the food chain from producers to top consumers.
Quick check
- Name two plant sources and two animal sources of food.
- Which part of the plant is potato? Which part is spinach?
- What is the difference between herbivores, carnivores and omnivores?
- What are producers and consumers in a food chain?
- Name three cereals and three pulses.
