Key concepts
The Vedic Age
- Aryans — semi-nomadic people who came to India (~1500 BCE); settled in Punjab, then spread east.
- Language: Sanskrit — language of the Vedas.
- Four Vedas: Rigveda (hymns — oldest, ~1500 BCE), Samaveda, Yajurveda, Atharvaveda.
- Economy: pastoralism + agriculture; cattle = wealth; horses important.
- Jana (tribe) → Janapada (settled territory of a tribe).
Varna system
| Varna | Role |
|---|---|
| Brahmin | Priests, teachers; performed rituals (yajnas) |
| Kshatriya | Warriors, rulers |
| Vaishya | Farmers, traders, artisans |
| Shudra | Servants; worked for the above three |
Later, untouchables (Dalits) placed outside this system — not one of the four varnas.
Note: Originally varna was based on occupation, not birth — became hereditary later.
The Mahajanapadas (c. 600 BCE)
- 16 large kingdoms and republics (mentioned in Buddhist texts).
- Republics (Gana-sanghas): ruled by a council of elders/warriors — e.g., Vajji (Licchhavis), Shakya (Buddha's clan).
- Monarchies: ruled by a king — e.g., Magadha, Kosala, Avanti, Gandhara.
| Mahajanapada | Capital | Region today |
|---|---|---|
| Magadha | Rajgir (later Pataliputra) | Bihar |
| Kosala | Shravasti | UP |
| Avanti | Ujjain | MP |
| Vatsa | Kaushambi | UP |
| Vajji | Vaishali | Bihar |
| Gandhara | Taxila | Pakistan |
Rise of Magadha
- Most powerful Mahajanapada; eventually became core of Mauryan Empire.
- Reasons: iron ore in nearby forests → better weapons and tools; fertile Ganga plain; control of river trade routes.
- Key rulers: Bimbisara, Ajatashatru, Mahapadma Nanda.
- Chandragupta Maurya (321 BCE) — founded Mauryan Empire by overthrowing Nanda dynasty.
Buddhism and Jainism
Both arose ~6th century BCE as a reaction against elaborate Vedic rituals and the dominance of Brahmin priests.
| Buddhism | Jainism | |
|---|---|---|
| Founder | Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) — born Lumbini, Nepal | Vardhamana Mahavira — born Vaishali, Bihar |
| Core teaching | Four Noble Truths + Eightfold Path; middle path; no extremes | Ahimsa (non-violence), Anekantavada (many truths), Aparigraha (non-possession) |
| God | No personal god | No creator god |
| Caste | Rejected caste system | Rejected caste system |
| Spread | Across Asia (China, Japan, SE Asia) via missionaries (Ashoka) | Mainly in India (Rajasthan, Gujarat) |
