Dependent (Subordinate) Clauses
What is a Dependent Clause?
A dependent clause (also called subordinate clause) has:
- A subject and a finite verb
- BUT does NOT express a complete thought
- CANNOT stand alone — it depends on an independent clause to complete its meaning
"Because she was late" — has subject (she) + verb (was) — but leaves you waiting: "because she was late, WHAT happened?"
Dependent clauses are introduced by subordinating conjunctions or relative pronouns.
Three Types of Dependent Clauses
1. Noun Clauses
Acts as a noun in the sentence (subject, object, or complement).
Introduced by: that, what, who, whom, whether, if, why, how, when, where
| Function | Example |
|---|---|
| Subject | What she said surprised everyone. |
| Object | I know that he will come. |
| Complement | The truth is that nobody was at fault. |
| After preposition | We argued about whether to go. |
2. Adjective Clauses (Relative Clauses)
Modifies a noun (like an adjective).
Introduced by: who, whom, whose, which, that
| Relative Pronoun | Use |
|---|---|
| who | for people (subject) |
| whom | for people (object) |
| whose | for possession |
| which | for things/animals |
| that | for people or things (defining clauses) |
"The student who topped the class received a prize." (who topped the class → modifies "student") "The book that I borrowed was very interesting." (that I borrowed → modifies "book") "The girl whose father is a scientist won the competition." (whose father → possession)
Defining vs Non-Defining Relative Clauses:
- Defining: Essential — removes ambiguity. No commas. → "The student who works hard succeeds."
- Non-defining: Extra information. Use commas. → "Riya, who studies medicine, is my cousin."
3. Adverb Clauses
Modifies a verb, adjective, or adverb — tells when, where, why, how, under what condition.
| Type | Conjunction | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Time | when, while, after, before, since, until, as soon as | When the bell rang, she left. |
| Reason | because, since, as | She cried because she was happy. |
| Condition | if, unless, whether | If it rains, we stay in. |
| Contrast | although, even though, though, while | Although she was tired, she continued. |
| Purpose | so that, in order that | She studied so that she could pass. |
| Result | so…that, such…that | She was so tired that she fell asleep instantly. |
| Manner | as, as if, as though | He spoke as if he knew everything. |
Identifying Dependent Clause Types — Quick Method
Look at the function in the sentence:
- Does the clause act as a noun (subject/object)? → Noun clause
- Does it modify a noun? → Adjective clause (starts with who/which/that)
- Does it modify a verb or adjective? → Adverb clause (starts with when/because/if/although)
Worked Examples
Identify the underlined clause type:
- "I believe that honesty is the best policy." → Noun clause (object of "believe")
- "The car that he bought is very expensive." → Adjective clause (modifies "car")
- "She will call when she arrives." → Adverb clause (time)
- "Whoever finishes first gets a prize." → Noun clause (subject)
- "He ran as if his life depended on it." → Adverb clause (manner)
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Using "that" instead of "who" for people | "The man who (not that) visited us…" (non-defining) |
| Fragment: treating dependent clause as sentence | "Although she tried." ❌ → Attach it to main clause |
| Confusing noun clause with relative clause | "What she said" (noun) vs "the girl who said it" (adjective) |
Quick Check
- Identify the type: "I don't know where she went."
- Identify the type: "The book which was on the shelf is missing."
- Add a main clause: "…because it was raining heavily."
- Write one sentence containing all three types of dependent clauses.
- Stretch: Rewrite "She is intelligent. She will succeed." as ONE sentence using each dependent clause type (three sentences total).
