Implicit Assumptions

• An implicit assumption is unstated but necessary for the statement to make sense.
• Ask: Would this claim fail if the assumption were false?
• Ignore restated facts and extreme claims.

1. Implicit = hidden, not written.
2. Necessary — statement collapses without it.
3. Negation test — if false, argument fails.
4. Ads and policies rely on assumptions.
5. Do not pick words copied from statement.
6. Too broad assumptions are wrong.
7. Two assumptions may both be implicit.
8. Distinguish from conclusions.

Ad: 'Use mosquito nets — malaria spreads at night.'

Step 1 — Nets assumed to help against mosquitoes.
Step 2 — Night biting risk assumed relevant.
Step 3 — Both are **implicit assumptions**.
Step 4 — 'Everyone owns a net' — too strong, not necessary.
